Butterfly Tour in Nepal

Butterflies are found all over the world and in all types of environments: hot and cold, dry and moist, at sea level and high in the mountains. Most butterfly species, however, are found in tropical areas, especially tropical rainforests. Many butterflies migrate in order to avoid adverse environmental conditions (like cold weather). Butterfly migration is not well understood. Most migrate relatively short distances (like the Painted Lady, the Red Admiral, and the Common Buckeye), but a few (like some Monarchs) migrate thousands of miles.

Butterflies and moth belong to the order Lepidoptera. Lepidos is Greek for "scales" and ptera means "wing". These scaled wings are different from the wings of any other insects. Lepidoptera is a very large group; there are more types of butterflies and moths than there are of any other type of insects except beetles. It is estimated that there are about 150,000 different species of butterflies and moths (there may be many more). There are about 28,000 butterfly species worldwide, the rest are moths.

Nepal, a tiny himalayan kingdom in the Indian subcontinent could also be said as the home to the varieties of butterfly as it is the house of 643 species of butterfly. Nepal being the diversified country with the topography starting from 47 masl to 8848 within the short distance of average 80 km has made this all avail. The great wealth of butterfly diversity in Nepal becomes apparent from its great bioclimatic variation from tropical and subtropical zone to the Tundra and the Arctic zone along the attitudinal gradation of the mountains.

Adventure Silk Road employees the guides who are knowledgeable on the butterfly species flying around the country. Our nature guides will escort you - a keen butterfly watcher or amateur enthusiast alike to search for these beautiful insects. Golf Tour in Nepal

Nepal may not be remembered only for trekking, hiking adventures. Nepal is also an ideal destination for golfers. We have some famous golf courses that provides excellent opportunity to play in the tranquil natural beauty and in the back drop of spectacular Himalayan panorama. Here you have some info about our golf courses and a suggested itinerary for golfing tour in Nepal.

Some of the the world?s most spectacular golf courses await you in Nepal. Lead architect David Mclay Kidd, and Director of Turfgrass Management James Kidd, both of Gleneagles Golf Developments, brought their world wide experience in design and agronomy to create a truly world class facility at Gokarna Golf Club in Kathmandu. Here and in several other golf courses in Nepal, a round of golf is both challenging and an incredible experience of nature in all its glory. It is no exaggeration to say that on these courses, while the lofty Himalayas will be keeping your score, you will feel all the worlds above and below coming together in your golfing experience.

When people imagine Nepal, they think of Himalayan mountains, of exotic temples and tranquil villages, of trekking, of rafting, and of touring and shopping. The local hospitality and friendliness prevailing on the streets manifests in the courses. Golfing Nepal is like being in an enchanted sanctuary, not a golf course. But unknown to most of the world, there are unpolished gems still relatively untapped in this Shangri-La of Asia ? wonderful golf courses to be played and experienced. Currently Nepal is home to five public golf courses: Gokarna Forest Golf Resort and Royal Nepal Golf Course in Kathmandu, Himalayan Golf Club and Fulbari Resort Golf Course in Pokhara and Nirvana Country Club in Dharan. Each is unique and enjoyable in separate ways.

Royal Nepal Golf Club, perched conjointly on the sloping land alongside the airport strip at Tilganga. Established in 1829 by the ruling Ranas, the course was given royal status in 1911 and claims to be one of the oldest golf clubs in Asia. Selected professionals and complete practice facilities are at hand for those who wish to follow that irresistible urge to improve, or perhaps, just to make a start at joining the golfing fraternity.

The most frequently seen is the powerful Russian-made MI-17. This is a big bird, capable of transporting four tons of cargo and can reach altitudes well in excess of 5,000 m.

The other craft are the smaller and more maneuverable French-made Ecureuil AS350B series and the Kawasaki BK 117. They are smooth and quiet and offer excellent visibility.

Even if you can not go for weeks long trekking in the Himalayas still you have a chance to observe and feel the natural beauty of Nepal. Helicopter Tour is just for you and the easier way to visit Nepal.

The Himalayan range in the north has more than 100 peaks that are over 6000 meters, of which 8 summits are among the world's tallest, and of course, the one and only Mt. Everest is not to be missed. The fertile land in the south known as 'Terai' boasts of abundant wildlife. To add more to your itinerary, you have the Kathmandu Valley with its ancient cities, temples and monasteries, and the Pokhara Valley with its beautiful lake side town nestled in the lap of the Himalayas. Hunting Tour in Nepal

In this ecological awakening age hunting seems quite contradictory but Nepal has been a favored ground for hunters since 9th century. In the Himalayan Kingdom, controlled hunting is allowed with proper license and certain seasons of the year. Hunting license is issued by the Department of National Park and Wildlife Conservation in Kathmandu and there are a few hunting outfitters who can make arrangements.

The organized hunting parties trek or fly (helicopter) into the high terrain areas in quest of the Himalayan Tahr and the Blue Sheep. Mid-elevation prizes include wild goat and sheep; in the Terai lowlands deer are sought. Hunting in Nepal is permitted only in designated areas, and a licensed guide must accompany hunting parties.

Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve is one of the prime habitats of blue sheep, a highly prized trophy animal, which is the main target of hunters. Other game species are Ghoral, Serow, Himalayan Tahr, Black Bear Pheasant and Partridge. Endangered species of the area include the red panda and cheer pheasant.

Besides hunting, Dhorpatan is also an attractive destination for the trekker and wildlife enthusiast as protection has enabled animal numbers to increase in this rarely visited area.

Accommodation here is on tented camp which can be provided by the Adventure Silk Road Inc. or at one of the villages.

Besides national parks and wildlife reserves His Majesty's Government of Nepal has also set aside a hunting reserve at Dhorpatan where controlled hunting of some species is allowed. Covering an area of 1,325 sq. km., the reserve is situated on the southern flanks of Mt. Dhaulangiri I (8,167 m.) in districts of Rukum, Baglung and Myagdi in western Nepal.

The area's vegetation is characterised by well-developed mixed-hardwood forest at lower elevation and many plant species of drier climate to the north. Tree species include fir, pine, birch, rhododendron, hemlock, oak, juniper and spruce. As in many other protected environments of Nepal, the reserve includes several villages inhabited by hill tribes as well as people of Tibetan descent who supplement farming with trade and animal husbandry. The reserve is one of the prime habitats of blue sheep, a highly prized trophy animal, which is the main target of hunters. Other game species are ghoral, serow, Himalayan thar, black bear, pheasant and partridge. Endangered species of the area include the red panda and cheer pheasant. Controlled hunting is allowed with proper license and certain seasons of the year. Game license is issued by the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation in Kathmandu and there are a few hunting outfitters who can make arrangements for expeditions. Agriculture Tour Nepal

Agriculture dominated the economy. In the late 1980s, it was the livelihood for more than 90 percent of the population--although only approximately 20 percent of the total land area was cultivable--and accounted for, on average, about 60 percent of the GDP and approximately 75 percent of exports.

Since the formulation of the Fifth Five-Year Plan (1975-80), agriculture has been the highest priority because economic growth was dependent on both increasing the productivity of existing crops and diversifying the agricultural base for use as industrial inputs.

In trying to increase agricultural production and diversify the agricultural base, the government focused on irrigation, the use of fertilizers and insecticides, the introduction of new implements and new seeds of high-yield varieties, and the provision of credit.

The lack of distribution of these inputs, as well as problems in obtaining supplies, however, inhibited progress. Although land reclamation and settlement were occurring in the Tarai Region, environmental degradation--ecological imbalance resulting from deforestation--also prevented progress.

Although new agricultural technologies helped increase food production, there still was room for further growth. Past experience indicated bottlenecks, however, in using modern technology to achieve a healthy growth. The conflicting goals of producing cash crops both for food and for industrial inputs also were problematic.

The production of crops fluctuated widely as a result of these factors as well as weather conditions. Although agricultural production grew at an average annual rate of 2.4 percent from 1974 to 1989, it did not keep pace with population growth, which increased at an average annual rate of 2.6 percent over the same period. Further, the annual average growth rate of food grain production was only 1.2 percent during the same period.

There were some successes. Fertile lands in the Tarai Region and hardworking peasants in the Hill Region provided greater supplies of food staples (mostly rice and corn), increasing the daily caloric intake of the population locally to over 2,000 calories per capita in 1988 from about 1,900 per capita in 1965. Moreover, areas with access to irrigation facilities increased from approximately 6,200 hectares in 1956 to nearly 583,000 hectares by 1990.

Rice was the most important cereal crop. In 1966 total rice production amounted to a little more than 1 million tons; by 1989 more than 3 million tons were produced. Fluctuation in rice production was very common because of changes in rainfall; overall, however, rice production had increased following the introduction of new cultivation techniques as well as increases in cultivated land. By 1988 approximately 3.9 million hectares of land were under paddy cultivation. In 1966 approximately 500,000 tons of corn, the second major food crop, were produced. By 1989 corn production had increased to over 1 million tons.

Other food crops included wheat, millet, and barley, but their contribution to the agricultural sector was small. Increased production of cash crops--used as input to new industries--dominated in the early 1970s. Sugarcane and tobacco also showed considerable increases in production from the 1970s to the l980s. Potatoes and oilseed production had shown moderate growth since 1980. Medicinal herbs were grown in the north on the slopes of the Himalayas, but increases in production were limited by continued environmental degradation. According to government statistics, production of milk, meat, and fruit had improved but as of the late 1980s still had not reached a point where nutritionally balanced food was available to most people. Additionally, the increases in meat and milk production had not met the desired level of output as of 1989.

Food grains contributed 76 percent of total crop production in 1988-89. In 1989-90 despite poor weather conditions and a lack of agricultural inputs--particularly fertilizer--there was a production increase of 5 percent. In fact, severe weather fluctuations often affected production levels. Some of the gains in production through the 1980s were due to increased productivity of the work force (about 7 percent over fifteen years); other gains were due to increased land use and favorable weather conditions.

Survival Tourism Nepal

The word survival is a very ambiguous one, and connotes a wide variety of meanings and associated skills. The skills that are being offered in the ensuing course are those of a traditional woodsman travelling and living in the northern wilds.

The daily use of these skills will be facilitated by learning them in a progressive manner during the course of the canoe trip. Travel will be in the Nepal mountain forest area where we will be surrounded by imposing white peaks of mountain Ranges, many with glaciers on their north faces. We'll be travelling on a mix of flat and moving water where a rich menu of strokes will be taught. In some places we will track and pole up incoming rivers and then canoe down them. Exact areas selected will be dependent on current water levels.

We will also hike into the mountains to do our topo map work, animal stalking, plant gathering, etc... Animals inhabiting this area include moose, black and grizzly bears, dall sheep, mountain goats, wolves, wolverine, caribou, otter and beaver. If not actually sighted, we'll see tracks and signs of many of them.

Bear defense tactics will be discussed and demonstrated. It is vital to understand their behaviour and then deal with them accordingly.

Food, grub, vittles -- by any name, a focal point of each day. Delicious meals will display Course skills as an unusual modern wilderness-nutrition advocate using organic foods and precise preparation. Although fish, and possibly small game, will be included in the meal offerings, vegetarians will be totally comfortable with our fare.

Fishing for trout and Arctic grayling is excellent, and the inclusion of lightweight spinning equipment and/or a fly rod is suggested. A belt knife is strongly recommended, either folding or fixed-blade for dressing fish and small game. We have Dick's favourite one available if desired.

Reading animal tracks and sign, and stalking animals, will be practised whenever the opportunity arises. We also will become familiar with the local flora and various of its edible and medicinal qualities.

Upon completion of this trip, a participant should be able to travel comfortably and safely through ways of easy to moderate difficulty and with a deep appreciation and respect for the wilderness.

The course/trip is scheduled as per required. An equipment check list will be sent when deposit is made.

Village Tourism Nepal

Village tourism has been emerged as a very new cocept in the Nepalese tourism industry. Nepal is normally popular in the world for the adventure travel, white water rafting and great jungle safari, staying at the specially built resorts or the self pitched tents. A brand new concept of village tourism where the guests - YOU would be taken to the carefully picked up village where you would be given the chances to know the local people, their culture by allowing them to stay on one of the house as a family member. A few guest room and kitchen are developed without disturbing the village environment. Villages continue their daily normal works and guests enjoy participating in the village activities. As you would be staying as a family member with your host family, you can participate in all activities of their daily choirs.

The friendly and hearty behaviors of the family members gives you a different experience that you have never enjoyed before. You have the chance to eat the traditional local food prepared in the neat and clean kitchen, which are delicious and are hygienic.

The tour gives you the chances to explore the real villages unlike having spent short time in different villages on trek. Your accomodation is in an actual home, allowing you to feel the cross-cultural exchange in the more authentic way unlike staying at the local lodge filled with other backpackers. You will be observing the real Nepalese cultural tradition from the closest quarter and intermingle with the locals. Besides, any expenses made at that level directly contribute to the welfare of the local community, which ultimately gives you the high sense of satisfaction.

Village Tours are normally conducted in Sirubari, Bandipur, Kakani and Gorkha. And Adventure Silk Road is operating the tour in other parts of Nepal too at the Chepang Village, Ghalegaun Village, Gorkha Village, Dhading Village, Lumbini Village, Balnthali Village.

Adventure Silk Road being your host will be proud to take you to one of the village tour of your interests in Nepal. Please write to us for more information about the village tours in this fascinating country.

This magical land holds sway over the imagination.

Draped along the spine of the Himalaya, Nepal is a land of sublime scenery, time-worn temples, and some of the best hiking trails on earth. It's a poor country, but it is rich in scenic splendour and cultural treasures. The kingdom has long exerted a pull on the Western imagination.

It's the kind of country that lingers in your dreams long after you leave it. This is why so many travellers are drawn back to Nepal, armed the second time round with a greater appreciation of its natural and cultural complexity, a stout pair of walking boots and a desire for sculpted calf muscles.

Travel Warning: General Security

Travellers to Kathmandu are advised to exercise caution, monitor news services and avoid any public demonstrations. Nepal's unpopular monarchy was abolished in May; Ram Baran Yadav was sworn in as first president of the new republic in July; Nepalese Maoist leader Prachanda became the new Prime Minister in August. Despite the new political stability, crime and violence has spiralled in recent times and there is increasing consumer anger over rising fuel costs. Transport companies were recently locked in a dispute with the Nepalese government over petrol prices and were on strike, seriously disrupting road travel.

Trekking in Nepal should only be done with a group and an experienced guide from an established company.

Wild Life

Royal Chitwan Park
The Royal Chitwan Park , considered a sanctuary in 1973 is situated in the sub-tropical lowlands of southern Nepal , lying between two mountain ranges, the Shivalik and the Mahabharat range. This is the flood plain of three rivers, the Rapti, the Reu and the Narayani. The forest is dominated by Sal trees (shorea robusta) and tall grasses. This is the natural habitat of endangered animals like Bengal tigers, one-horned rhinoceros and gharial crocodile. This park also provides shelters for some of the animals that needs protection like gaur (the world's largest wild cattle), four species of deer, leopards, wild dogs, fishing cats, leopard cats, python and Gangetic dolphin. There are over 50 species of mammals and 450 species of birds in the park.

Royal Bardiya National Park
This park is situated in western Nepal to the south of the Shivalik range bordering the Karnali River on the west. The vegetation and wild life found in this park are similar to those of the Royal Chitwan National Park . In addition, the wild elephant and swamp deer are also found here. Rhinos in this area became extinct a long time ago. Therefore, 13 rhinoceros were captured in Chitwan National Park and introduced in this park.

There are also many other animals found in Nepal. Some of them are, the Sloth Bear, Rhesus monkey, Wild Boar, Mongoose, Hog Deer, Barking Deer, Spotted Deer, Jackel, Ratel, Civet, Hyenas, Langur, Water Dolphin,Monitor Lizard, Indian Python, Tortoise, King Cobra and 19 other species of snakes.

Going private is an increasingly popular option, which has some distinct advantages:

You choose your own dates.
You decide whom you want to take with you.
You have the option to take our Sirdar (leader) or go self-led.

Services can be tailored to your budget. The cost of going private can be surprisingly reasonable, particularly if you take the self-led option. The larger the group, the lesser the cost per person is the general rule.

ACCLIMATIZATION TO HIGH ALTITUDES

We are all too aware of the effects that a rarefied atmosphere can have on the human body, so every expedition we operate includes a realistic acclimatization program. Acclimatization takes time and there are no safe shortcuts. The length of an expedition is usually determined by the time necessary for adaptation to the altitude. This could involve an acclimatization trek before the climb, or climbing a lower peak before the main objective. Such preparation is one of the main reasons why our expeditions achieve the highest possible success.

New Peaks Opened for Mountaineering

In its effort to attract adventure-loving tourists to Nepal for climbing peaks, His Majesty's government has recently opened 116 more peaks for climbing in the different parts of the country. Now, the government has authorized Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) to operate 15 more mountaineering peaks which until this time was handled by the government. All peaks are above 6000 metres except one. Now the number of peaks opened for climbing has reached 276.

The opening up of these peaks in the context of celebrating Destination Nepal Year 2002-2003, International Year of Mountains 2002 and Golden Jubilee Celebration Year on the successful ascent of Mount Everest 2003 will help develop Nepal as a premier mountain tourism destination in the international arena. This step is also expected to contribute to develop the deprived and backward sectors from the viewpoint of Nepal's mountain tourism development.

New peaks that have very recently been opened for climbing are Tashi Kang (6386 m.), Tsartse (6398 m.), Khatung Kang (6484 m.), Norbu Kang (6005 m.), Kangfu Gaton (5916 m.), Nemjung (7139 m.), Danphe Sail (6103 m.), Ghenye Liru (6571 m.), Mera South (6064 m.), Naulekh (6240 m.), Khangri Shar (6811 m.), Khangri West (6773 m.) and Lung Sampa (6100 m.).

THE MOUNTAIN ENVIRONMENT

As a professional expedition organizer, we are very conscious of our responsibility to the mountain environment and the local people.

On the ground, our efforts to promote "sustainable mountain tourism" includes removal of all our rubbish from the mountain and base camp for proper disposal, centralized toilet facilities, a cash bonus system for Sherpas bringing rubbish and equipment down the mountain, removal of climbing gear and, whenever possible, fixed ropes from the climbs (extreme conditions may prevent this). We also use gas and kerosene for cooking, and discourage the burning of wood. There is always room for improvement and we are constantly reviewing our environmental policy for each wilderness region we visit. These measures are not easy to implement and they can be expensive, but the mountains are worth it. We ask all expedition members to cooperate fully with the environmental and cultural policy applicable to their trip. This will be much appreciated not only by us, but also by those who visit the mountains in the days ahead.

Nepal Mountaineering Rules

Main features

His Majesty's Government of Nepal has enacted a new "Mountaineering Rules, 2059 (2002) to achieve basic objectives of bringing about the mountaineering highly attractive, competitive, simple and generic. These new rules have replaced the "Mountaineering Rules, 2036". This decision has been taken by the cabinet meeting on 2 May 2002.

The main features of these Rules are as follows:

1. As per these new Rules, climbers participating in mountaineering expedition have to cross the age of 16 years.

2. These Rules have cancelled the existing season based concept of mountaineering and opened whole year for the same purpose. Accordingly, mountaineering time has been determined based on the height of the mountain and area concept.

3. The Rules have cancelled the old provision of compulsory acquirement of recommendation letters from the Alpine Clubs of the respective countries by the foreign mountaineers

. 4. Timely improvements regarding the Royalty of Mt. Everest and the structure of the expedition team have been accomplished. According to these new provisions, a sole member may also be allowed to scale the Mt. Everest from the common route (southeast edge) with least Royalty of $25,000.00. There will be an enhancement of direct and indirect advantage by alluring additional mountaineering through the expedition of Mt. Everest with a special royalty scheme set for one to six persons on the expedition. The Royalty for climbers of routes excluding normal routes remains unchanged at $50,000.00.

5. New provision has been made to grant the primary license on the basis advance payment based on peak royalty to reduce the business uncertainty, commitment of mountaineers, unnecessary administrative workload. The amount has been fixed 5% of royalty for the Mt. Everest and 10% for other peaks.

6. The old special provision of acquiring a deposit for the management of garbage produced from the mountaineering activities has been extended to all the newly opened peaks through out the Kingdom to protect the environment of the mountain areas. Such deposit has been determined as $5,000.00 to 4,000.00. 7. A new policy provision of granting revenue concession for the development of backward areas from the socio-economic point of view has been incorporated. Further, a new policy wise provision of granting Royalty concession for the promotion of Mountaineering in the lean season and less frequented peaks has been brought in to effect. This provision is expected to become an additional attraction on Nepalese Mountains amongst the international mountaineers and expected to raise the total contribution of tourism sector in the national economy.

8. An increment and improvement in the Salary/allowances of individuals (contact officer, leader, guide in high peaks workers in the base-camp, permanent porter) directly involved or contributing assistance in the mountaineering activities has been acquainted with.

9. These new rules have introduced a reasonable increment in individual accident insurance and new additional provision of medical insurance and emergency insurance to guarantee the security of the individuals involved in the mountaineering activities and his/her family.

10. These rules have made necessary improvements in the conditions and responsibilities to be obeyed by the team and team leader to make the mountaineering team more responsible.

11. In the duties and other activities, to be followed by the contact officer assigned to be involved in the mountaineering team, team leader and peak guide, have been made general improvements to make them more responsible in the mountaineering activities.

12. The rules have introduced a provision of contract paper to guarantee the security of the team leader, guide in high peaks, workers in base camp or local porters which is expected to make them more responsible and whole employment process transparent. 13. Improving the existing provision, according to which only the climbing time could be postponed after depositing the Royalty, the new provision has allowed to add or alter the peaks to scale instead of old one limiting the Royalty charge paid.

14. HMG has also revised the existing mandatory system of deputing the Liaison Officer to every expedition team to the Himalayan peaks. As per the current provision peaks ranging below 6500 meters including the old and new do not require Liaison Officer anymore with effect from upcoming spring season 2002 (March 1, 2002). As per the new system, expedition to 89 of the Himalayan peaks does not require the service of Liaison Officer.
